Pac-12 Baseball: OSU, UO clinch series wins

TUCSON, Ariz. — Jake Rodriguez did not get one of Oregon State’s seven hits Saturday at No. 20 Arizona, but hit two sacrifice flies to send the third-ranked Beavers to the series win over the Wildcats in a 4-3 decision at Hi Corbett Field.

Four Oregon State relievers combined to hold the Wildcats scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings to give the Beavers to their fourth consecutive win in Tucson.

The Beavers (18-1, 2-0 Pac-12) utilized a three-run sixth to claim the win. Dylan Davis drove in two on a double.

OSU starter Andrew Moore became the first Pac-12 pitcher to go 5-0 this season. Moore, out of North Eugene High, exited after 5 2/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs with three strikeouts.

Oregon State tallied seven hits on the night, getting two from Kavin Keyes.

Oregon 8 Southern Cal 4

LOS ANGELES — Oregon scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally for a Pac-12 Conference win over USC on Saturday night at Dedeaux Field.

Scott Heineman led the Ducks (15-5, 2-0 Pac-12), going 3-for-6 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Mitchell Tolman, making just his third career start, went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored and J.J. Altobelli was 2-for-5.

Darrell Hunter picked up his first career win in relief of Tommy Thorpe. Hunter gave up two hits, but no runs in 1 1/3 innings.

USC (7-11, 0-2 Pac-12) took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the sixth behind five hits and a walk. The Ducks responded with a six-run eighth inning.

The Ducks go for a series sweep at noon today.


Oregon State 6 Arizona 2

TUCSON, Ariz. — Michael Conforto hit a three-run home run and Matt Boyd limited Arizona to two hits and two runs in seven innings to pace the Beavers to a win to open conference play.

Boyd held the Wildcats to two hits and two runs — one earned — over seven innings in his first career start against a league foe. He earned the win to improve to 4-0 this season. Boyd improved to 6-0 in seven career starts and the lefty is 5-0 in March in 20 appearances, lowering his earned run average in the month to 1.69.

Conforto ended the game with three hits. Tyler Smith, Kevin Keyes, Joey Jansen and Dylan Davis all had two.

Oregon 5 USC 2

LOS ANGELES — Brett Thomas, Scott Heineman and J.J. Altobelli combined for six hits and three RBIs to lead the Ducks to a win in the Pac-12 opener.

Thomas and Altobelli both went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Heineman was 2-for-5 with and RBI. Jake Reed (2-3) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. Jimmie Sherfy got his sixth save, pitching the ninth inning.
