Prep Golf: Experienced Roseburg boys have high hopes

Roseburg High boys golf coach Chad Smith sees good things ahead for his 2013 team.

He’ll field an all-senior lineup for the first time during his tenure with the Indians, hoping they can put together some consistent golf and play their way into the Class 6A state tournament.

“I’m extremely excited about what we’ve got in front of us,” Smith said following practice on Tuesday. “The experience is there ... we have a couple of kids who have worked hard on their game and played a ton of golf. We have three seniors who are capable of shooting in the low-70s and others in the mid-70s.”

The Indians fell short of making it to state last year, finishing third behind South Eugene and Sheldon following the Southwest Conference Championships. Drew Groshong did qualify individually, tying for fourth.

Fellow seniors Arie Yraguen and Devin Caylor have previous state tournament experience; they, along with Groshong, were on the 2011 team that finished second at district and played at state and Yraguen qualified individually as a freshman in 2010.

Yraguen and senior Garrett Ramsey had the two lowest scoring averages last season. Senior Kai Seely is in his second year of golf and senior Zach Wilson was in the varsity lineup in the first tournament of the season at Bandon. Nate Rust is another senior who played on the junior varsity last year.

“I’d like to say we’re one of the district favorites,” Smith said. “South Eugene is rebuilding. Sheldon has a good program and North Medford has a good club, too. You’ve got to be lucky and good (at district) ... we’ve got the good part down, but we didn’t get too many breaks last year. You better play some good golf or you’ll be staying home.”

The top two league teams are determined after three regular season and two district rounds.

The Indians finished third behind Westview and Bend at the Marshfield Invitational at Bandon Dunes on March 11. Ramsey had the best 18-hole score with an 80, Wilson shot 82, Caylor 84 and Yraguen 86.

“We didn’t shoot very well (at Bandon), but looking at the stats all four of our kids hit 50 percent of the fairways,” Smith said. “I thought our ball-striking was tremendous. We got into trouble with our second shots and didn’t putt as well as we needed to, but overall I was pretty pleased with how we played.”

Roseburg will compete in the Marist Invitational at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River Thursday. The SWC tournament will be held May 6-7 at Eugene Country Club, followed by the state tournament May 13-14 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.
