Umpqua Valley Report

Local father, daughter set state lifting records

A powerlifting team made up of a Sutherlin Middle School seventh-grader and her father broke state bench press records at the North American Bench Press and Deadlift Championships on March 16 in Portland.

Rian Berriman, 13, bench-pressed 104 pounds to set a new Oregon mark for 114-pound females.

Berriman’s father, 35-year-old Nick Berriman, set a record in the Law/Fire 198-pound open division with his lift of 513 pounds.

Nick and Rian, who say they train at their home garage in Sutherlin, traveled to the Shilo Inn-Portland Airport for the event.

Glide wrestlers qualify for Team Oregon trip

Glide High wrestlers Walker Damewood and Luke O’Connor recently qualified to compete for Team Oregon this summer against teams in Germany and are seeking sponsors for the trip.

Damewood and O’Connor — who have both delivered individual and team Class 3A championships to Glide — wrestled their way in as part of the Oregon Wrestling Culture Exchange, which had qualifying on March 16 at Thurston High in Springfield. O’Connor, a senior, was the champion at 160 pounds. Damewood, a junior, was the 145-pound champ.

The attempt to become a part of the Culture Exchange Team was Damewood’s third and O’Connor’s first. Glide teammate Garret Short narrowly missed out, placing third at 160 pounds.

The trip, which will include stops all over Germany, is scheduled for July 23 through August 4. The boys need to raise $2,800 each.

The OWCE is a non-profit organization established in 1962. Donations can be used as tax deductions (tax ID 93-1150366).
