Good day to shine

No rain, plenty to gain.

The Roseburg High track and field teams — particularly the younger athletes — took a step forward in their Southwest Conference dual meets with South Medford on a comfortable spring day at Finlay Field Wednesday.

Sophomore Gabrielle Kearney won all three throwing events and senior Kathryn Pitts took the long jump and triple jump for the Roseburg girls, who beat the Panthers 73-70.

Jason Thomas won the 100 and 200 meters for the RHS boys, who dropped an 84-61 decision to South.

“Overall, a good meet,” surmised Roseburg coach Brian Cuilty. “The (freshman) girls are showing they’re able to compete at the varsity level. (Freshman) Mitchell Kilkenny was solid in the 400 and is a great competitor.”

Freshman Mahala Norris is among the newcomers who’s impressing the coaching staff. Norris dusted South junior Stefani Ritter in the final 100 meters of the 1,500 with a blazing kick to win the race in 5 minutes, 24.2 seconds. Norris came close to a second victory but couldn’t catch Panther senior Sarah Kapple at the finish of the 800, clocking a personal best 2:24.56 — not far off the RHS all-time top 10 list.

“We haven’t had many girls run that fast (in the 800) in a decade,” Cuilty said. “Mahala is very inexperienced (at this race), and that’s what’s so exciting.”

“I’m glad about that time,” Norris said. “I learned I probably need to kick sooner. This was my second 800 and I’m starting to like it.”

Kearney easily won the shot put (35-1), discus (108-6) and javelin (123-0). Sophomores Meg Jackson and Ashley Backen are improving, with Jackson throwing a PR 115-6 for second in the javelin and Backen heaving the shot 33-4 ½ to take third.

Pitts went 15-2 ¼ in the long jump and 31-6 in the triple jump. The other winner for the Indians was freshman Devony Dettman in the 100 (13.55).

Thomas, a senior, posted times of 11.71 in the 100 and 23.22 in the 200, the latter a PR.

“That was a good run for me (in the 200) … I beat my PR,” he said. “I went a little harder on the end of the curve, and it helped.”

“Jason is hard working, relentless, a fierce competitor,” Cuilty said. “It’s great to have someone like him on the team. He leads by example.”

Kilkenny nipped South junior Grant Davis at the end of the 400 to earn the win, clocking a PR 54.55.

“It’s fun … my first varsity win of the year,” Kilkenny said. “This boosts my confidence and I want to do it again. I set a PR and that was cool. I had a slow start, but I saw him slowing down at the end and went for it.”

Also winning events for the Tribe were senior Zack Moffitt in the pole vault (11-6), senior Cameron Fisher in the discus (116-10), senior Trey Nickols in the 110 hurdles (17.50), junior Austin Hutchins in the javelin (160-9) and junior Kenny Freeman in the 3,000 (9:18.3).
