College Baseball: Beavers even series with UCLA; Ducks drop two

LOS ANGELES — Andrew Moore scattered four hits in 6 2/3 innings and Max Engelbrekt and Scott Schultz combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the sixth-ranked Oregon State baseball team shut out No. 10 UCLA, 5-0, Saturday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

The Beavers’ win evened the series at one game apiece. The clubs conclude the series at 1 p.m. today.

“I’m proud of the way this team fought back after a tough loss on Friday,” Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. “Andrew gave us a great start and Max and Scott did a great job in relief. The offense came through when we needed it.”

Moore (6-1), a North Eugene product, allowed four singles and three walks while striking out five. Engelbrekt allowed one hit and one walk in 1 1/3 innings before giving way to Schultz, who finished the game in a non-save situation.

Kavin Keyes, Andy Peterson, Joey Jansen, Ryan Barnes and Nate Esposito all had two hits to pace the Beavers (24-5, 6-2 Pac-12).

ASU 14, Oregon 9

TEMPE, Ariz. — The Sun Devils held off a Ducks rally with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to clinch a series win Saturday night.

The loss dropped Oregon (22-8, 8-3 Pac-12) out of first place in the conference race.

JJ Altobelli went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Ducks, who used six pitchers in the contest. Freshman Mitchell Tolman had three hits in five at-bats.

The two clubs conclude the series at 12:30 p.m. today.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

UCLA 3, OSU 2

LOS ANGELES — Ryan Barnes posted two hits and Dylan Davis doubled home a run in the eighth inning, but the Beavers dropped a decision to the Bruins in the series opener.

Kevin Williams homered to lead off the fifth for UCLA, ending a 1-1 tie. The Bruins added to their after two Oregon State errors in the seventh. Matt Boyd (6-1) was saddled with the loss after going 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander allowed four hits and three runs while striking out five.

ASU 6, Oregon 5

TEMPE, Ariz. — Pinch-hitter R.J. Ybarra singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Sun Devils the win in the series opener.

The Ducks rallied from a four-run deficit in the eighth inning to send the game into extra innings, but ASU never let the Ducks take the lead. Ryan Burr (1-0) picked up the win, while Christian Jones (0-1) took the loss.

Mitchell Tolman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and run for UO. Ryon Healy was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs, while Steven Packard went 2-for-5. Brett Thomas and Tyler Baumgartner both went 2-for-6.
