Prep Baseball: Roseburg blasts No. 1 Ashland in twin bill

Whatever lingering frustration followed the Roseburg High baseball team from its series loss against Grants Pass to Legion Field on Tuesday is likely gone.

Not just because the Indians swept Ashland, the top-ranked team in the 5A ranks, but because a trend that should serve them well for the rest of the season is emerging: The Indians are hitting, and they’re suddenly hitting a lot.

They compiled 26 hits against the Grizzlies, cruising to wins of 13-3 and 10-0 in contests that were shortened to six innings each.

Since losing 1-0 to Grants Pass last Tuesday, the Indians (11-3 overall) have scored in double digits four straight games. They’re averaging a Southern Oregon Hybrid-best 9.1 runs per contest.

Rightfielder Layne Westwang had two hits in each game, scoring four runs and driving in three more in the opener as every Indian in the lineup contributed at least one hit.

“We were fortunate to see some of (Ashland’s) best arms and had some very good at-bats against them both games,” Roseburg coach Troy Thompson said. “So that was encouraging.”

The Indians, who are No. 2 in the 6A power rankings behind North Medford, got three hits from three different players in Game 1: Ryan Carhart, who had two doubles and two RBIs, Zach Wyscaver and Cody Watkins.

Tristan Guillen stole the show in the nightcap with two hits, including a triple, and four RBIs. Trenton Allen and Westwang chipped in two hits each.

Cody Walker got the Game 1 decision, striking out six in five innings before giving way to Brady Haskett. Cody Bassett was the winner in Game 2, scattering five singles in six shutout frames. He struck out two and walked one.

The Grizzlies dipped to 8-8 overall.

Roseburg hosts Eagle Point in another nonleague game Saturday before opening a key three-game series next Tuesday at North Medford, the conference leader.
