Letter: Support Casa de Belen, not straightening Stewart Park S curves

Support Casa, not road work

I am puzzled by the city council’s decision to cut funding for Casa De Belen. It seems as though a couple million dollars to straighten curves that no one seems to have trouble with and that do not impede traffic is important. It seems that providing $20,000 to a nonprofit organization whose sole purpose is to provide a hand up to young people who want to become productive members of our community is less important.

I have been on Casa’s board for some time and observed the struggle of a handful of people trying to meet the demands of government regulations and the criteria of charitable organizations. I’ve seen the heartache of the director and the staff of Casa as they deal with loss of funding from the leaders of the cities where the residents of Casa come from. I think the members of those councils should visit Casa. Maybe that would cause the city councilors to take stock of their priorities.
