Casa deserves funds
Local governments in Roseburg and Sutherlin are considering withdrawing financial support from Casa de Belen — Roseburg’s only shelter for homeless teenagers and their families. Elected officials have suggested that it is not their role to fund nonprofit organizations and recommended that instead community members and churches should be supporting Casa de Belen.
But local churches, their congregations, and other community members are already doing everything they can to support places like Casa de Belen. Churches have provided space, volunteer time, and funds to support warming center sites. They have collected donations to make possible the annual Day of Sharing. They provide ongoing support to the FISH pantry as well as providing meals and food directly to those in need. Perhaps elected officials have failed to notice these and other efforts made by faith based and community organizations.
To adequately care for our homeless neighbors, friends, families and young people, everyone must do their part and this necessarily includes local government. Instead of cutting funding to Casa de Belen we should encourage the work they are doing by perhaps doubling our financial support.
