Need bike path on Harvard Ave.
Don’t straighten the S curve, make Harvard Avenue safe, instead.
I would like to thank the people who have written letters objecting to spending $2.5 million to straighten the S curve on Stewart Parkway. I agree this is an unconscionable prioritization of funds.
Furthermore, I object to straightening the curves from a safety and aesthetic point of view. The curves necessitate slowing down, which makes it safer than a straight road where drivers can go faster. The curves are the prettiest, most enjoyable section of the “Roseburg square,” created by Garden Valley, Stephens Street, Harvard Avenue and Stewart Parkway. I enjoy the shady trees, grass, flowers, and, yes, the curves. They are the only section of the square with character. If mitigating intermittent flooding is important, I’m sure there’s a better and less expensive way to do it.
A street that does need fixing for public health and safety is West Harvard. There are numerous neighborhoods, schools, the Umpqua Valley Arts Center, Fir Grove Park, the Veterans Cemetery and other destinations along Harvard. Yet there is no safe bike path. Many people drive to their destinations along Harvard, including driving their children to school, which increases traffic and replaces opportunities for fresh air and exercise.
Children and adults who do ride their bikes on Harvard risk being hit by cars because they must ride in the car lane or on the sidewalk, crossing the many driveways and streets that intersect Harvard.
Spending the 2.5 million on a bike path on West Harvard would get lots more people out there riding and improving their health, reduce traffic and improve safety for children and adults alike.
