Letter: Gun crime down in U.S.

Gun crime down in U.S.

Joe Biden came at gun owners again in a speech the other day. Here are some facts to counter the bilge. The government’s Bureau of Justice Statistics shows a 39% decrease in gun-related homicides from 1993 to 2011. The Pew Research Center shows that non-fatal gun crimes were down by 70% from 1.5 million in 1993 to 467,300 last year. So I don’t know where Joe gets his figures because I doubt that trends have changed much since Sandy Hook.

I wish he would talk about the 2.5 million incidents a year wherein U.S. civilians use firearms to stop crime, usually without having to fire a shot. But that would be along the lines of honest debate, I guess, something this government is not known for.
