Driver crashes while being chased by trooper in Winston

A man with a felony warrant was arrested Thursday afternoon by Oregon State Police after he tried to elude a trooper along Interstate 5 and Highway 42 in Douglas County.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., a trooper attempted to stop a 1990 Acura Integra for a traffic violation on Interstate 5 near Milepost 118 south of Roseburg.

The northbound driver attempted to elude the trooper at speeds of more than 100 mph before taking Exit 119 to Highway 42 and heading west toward Winston, according to OSP Lt. Doug Ladd.

The trooper slowed down because of traffic and was about to terminate the pursuit when the Acura driver tried to turn south onto Grange Road and lost control. The vehicle went off the road and into bushes and stopped. The driver surrendered and was taken into custody.

OSP identified the driver as Dee Swiss Thomas IV, 31, from Azalea. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of felony attempt to elude in a vehicle, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person and third-degree assault. He was wanted on a felony warrant failure to appear. He was in custody today in lieu of $250,000 bail.

An 18-year-old female passenger received minor injuries. She was treated at the scene by medical personnel and then released after cooperating with the investigation. She was not arrested.
