Letter: Sad to see Roseburg VA cemetery plants dying

VA Cemetery: use local help

It’s sad to see some of the new work at the Roseburg National Cemetery neglected to the point that many of the new trees have died and part of the grass has become unsightly.

As I read the article about that situation, I had to wonder: When Douglas County is filled with trees and has dozens of well-established nurseries familiar with what grows well in the area, why did the cemetery planners contract with someone from Clackamas to do the landscaping work? Local landscapers and nurserymen are probably better qualified to choose what will do well here and perhaps would have taken sufficient pride in their work to check up on the trees to see that they were continuing to thrive.
