Letter: Retain our title: ‘Timber Capital of the Nation’

Keep ‘Timber Capital’ title

The publisher of The News-Review was right on when he called for keeping “The Timber Capital of the Nation.” That has been the city’s slogan for as long as I can remember (and that’s a long time). Roseburg is the county seat for Douglas County and we carry that banner for all. As I’ve traveled through life and many countries, I have been asked where I was from; I replied, “Roseburg, Oregon, Timber Capital of the Nation.” No further explanation was needed.

Our whole nation has been affected by the cut-backs in building. I’m sure it will come back. It will be a slow process, but it will come back. I don’t know if our county commissioners use our slogan when they go to Washington, D.C., to talk to Congress about the safety net, but if they do, we should not take it away from them.

I believe in traditions and I don’t want to take away from what the likes of Kenneth Ford and Gerry Bruce built.
