Letter: Don’t allow Democracy to fail

Prevent future govt. shutdown

For my fellow Americans: Are you or someone you know in the process of buying a home? A parent of a preschool age child? A small business owner? A veteran or military spouse? Have you recently become a new mother? Do you know someone whose child has cancer or some other serious illness? Or, do you just love to vacation in the beautiful parks throughout our country? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you or someone you know was impacted by the recent government shutdown.

As Americans, we pride ourselves on the fact that we live in the greatest country in the world; not just because of our resources, but because we live in a Democracy. We live in a country where every citizen has a voice, and that voice can be expressed in many ways, most importantly by the way we vote. In a Democracy, majority rules.

Well, American Democracy is failing. A minority group within the House of Representatives managed to push its will on America and shut down the government. This is not how Democracy works. This is the tail wagging the dog. We need to unite as Oregonians and tell Congress that the American people do not want the government shut down, again. This impacts too many of us! We as Americans care for each other, and we need to ask Congress to do the same.

Call your Oregon senators and representatives. Use the voice of the people to say, “Keep the government open without condition.”
