Prep Basketball: Camas Valley finishes off New Hope Christian

CAMAS VALLEY — The Camas Valley Hornets felt vindicated with a 46-40 win over New Hope Christian Friday night in a Skyline League boys basketball game.

The Warriors handed Camas Valley its only league loss in Grants Pass earlier in the season and the Hornets were looking to even the score.

“It feels good.” C.V. senior forward Matt Thompson said. “They got us down there and we got them here. They were our only loss in league, so it felt good to get them back.”

The Hornets got off to a rough start and fell behind 14-7 after one quarter.

“The first quarter is always really hard for us,” Theran Hunt, a Hornet senior, said. “We like to feel them out first.”

The Hornets came back strong in the second quarter and were ahead 21-20 by halftime.

“We got some substitutes in, and we just kept pressuring, and got the ball back and forced some turnovers and capitalized on that,” Camas Valley coach Marty Amos said. “We have a tendency to wake up slow. We’ve got to get to where, when we step out on the court, we’re ready to play.”

The second half was pretty even and neither team was able to pull away.

The Hornets — a team that consists mostly of football players — played a physical and intense game with a lot of long passes and fastbreaks.

“We’re pretty basic, everybody knows what we’re going to do,” Amos said. “We just have to do it better than what they’re going to defend. You have to see what they’re going to do to defend you, and start capitalizing on that.”

The Warriors seemed prepared for the Hornets’ playing style and kept up with the Skyline’s first-place team.

“We just had a mental block with them,” Amos said. “They beat us three times last year and we kind of gave those games away. It’s one of those teams that we struggle to overcome.”

Hunt led the team with 16 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals, but following the game all he could think about was his free-throw shooting.

Hunt missed all three of his attempts, and overall the team only shot 2 of 10 (20 percent).

“The ‘W’ is what we’re aiming for,” Thompson said, adding “we can still get better.”

Thompson’s defensive stops don’t show up in stat sheets, but Amos praised his performance and his ability to slow down the Warriors’ top offensive threat.

Weston Tilton added nine rebounds and three steals to his eight points for the Hornets. Kai Wolfe contributed seven points and Ryan Gallagher added six.

The Warriors were led by Austin Abbott with 14 points — five coming in the first quarter.

“We have to learn to throw the first punch and not get knocked down,” Thompson said.
