A male subject wanted by police was given the opportunity to turn himself in after refusing to exit his car for more than an hour and a half, according to a press release from the Sutherlin Police Department.

At approximately 7:20 p.m. Thursday, officers contacted the man in a vehicle that was parked in an abandoned parking lot in the 1700 block of South Calapooia Street, Sutherlin.

The male refused to leave the vehicle, despite the efforts of officers from the Sutherlin and Roseburg police departments and from deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

After more than an hour and a half, Sutherlin Police Chief Troy Mills said officers made the decision to leave the scene after giving the man the opportunity to turn himself in at a later time.

Mills said the decision was made to avoid “provoking a use of force incident.”

Mills was not available for comment and the press release did not specify whether the subject turned himself in, or what charges the subject was wanted for.

More to come.

5 days and no update. Where is the more to come part of this article?

"More to come." Okay it has been 3 days since this and still waiting on the more to come part.

Yep, I'm with you. I've heard some gossip, but that's all it is. Can our local paper let us know if we have a perp running around town, or not????

Sutherlin it's time for a new Police Chief.

I know I don't have all the facts; yet, when a perp creates an hour and half stand off: I believe it's due time for a ride to jail.

When there are outside agencies involved, when resources are utilized, then I believe it's time to do something. HOWEVER, Sutherlin Police Department Chief Troy Mills choose to wash his hands for what he (singular) decided as a safer alternative without full regard for public safety. You might ask who will be liable if this perp decides to hurt himself or others.

What's wrong with breaking a few car windows or busting heads.

I used to flash some sack, but that just brought on a whooping.

[huh] I think the public is entitled to more details. We can't have the police unable to do their jobs because they are afraid of the left leaning news media. We pay these officers to protect the public. And then we cry when they do. If anyone is dumb enough to disobey an order to get out of your car, they can expect a use of force. If they can't expect a use of force, what good are our police?

You do make a valid point.

just me

yes she certainly does

Kudos to them for making that decision. This is the way peace officers should behave. Maybe we can be an example to those other communities where the police have too frequently become too trigger happy.

***Betsy. We have no idea what this guy's criminal history is. If he is just a thief, fine wait for him later. What if he is wanted for spousal assault or child molesting? Do you still want the PD to back off and let him dictate his own outcome? If he was hardcore they would get him no matter what. You are making a general opinion on things you see in the news that do not include the entire facts. You have no idea what police do at work and again are basing your feelings on a few minutes of often biased news or a tv cop show.

"Provoking a use of force incident." My guess is that the subject is not Caucasian.

So all you have to do if you don't want to be arrested is sit in your auto and refuse to come out? Why no name or other info?

If you live in myrtle creek, and you are drunk in public and female, the cops will give you a ride home!
