PORTLAND (AP) — The authorities are investigating whether a Clackamas County election worker tampered with mail ballots this week.
County Clerk Sherry Hall says a criminal violation of election law was uncovered by her office Wednesday and reported to the secretary of state’s Elections Division.
Hall declined to identify the worker or describe the specific nature of the violation. Because it’s a criminal matter, the Elections Division referred the case to the state attorney general’s office.
Department of Justice spokesman Jeff Manning told Willamette Week — which first reported the story — that investigators are looking into whether a temporary county worker tampered with ballots that had already been mailed in by voters. Marking another person’s ballot is a felony.
The campaign of Clackamas County Chairwoman Charlotte Lehan is considering launching lrgal action prior to the November 6th election claiming the tampering 'was a Republican effort'.
