Glide will build a new fire station

GLIDE — Voters approved a $2.5 million bond to build a fire station and substation for the Glide Rural Fire Protection District.

Final unofficial election results from Tuesday night showed voters favored the bond with 54 percent, or 1,016 people, voting “yes” while 46 percent, or 865 said “no.” The new station will be built behind the existing station next to Glide High School.

Glide Rural Fire Protection District spokesman Mark Csernak said Tuesday evening he was thrilled by the results.

“That’s pretty exciting,” he said. “We’re at the point where we have to do something about the firehouse.”

The 12,020-square-foot station will double the capacity of the current 35-year-old station. The district will also use the funding to build a substation near the Glide transfer site to provide better protection for homes along Whistlers Park and South Bank roads. The bond to build both stations will cost taxpayers up to 57 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation over 25 years, according to fire officials.

Voters in 2010 rejected a proposal to build a slightly larger $2.95 million station. In 2008, voters turned down a proposal to build a $3.85 million station.

The district has saved $280,000 since 2000 to contribute to the project.

Group Mackenzie, the Portland firm that evaluated the district’s needs and drew up plans for a new station, reported that building a new station would cost only $78,900 more than remodeling the current station.

The current station’s problems include rotting wood, moisture, poor drainage, insufficient insulation, inefficient windows, and inadequate heating and ventilation. The building would have to be made accessible for people with disabilities.

“The old firehouse is pretty much at the end of its useful life,” Csernak said.
