DRAIN — A quirky detail inspired North Douglas High School senior Zach Nash to become an athletic shoe designer. He was intrigued to learn that Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman created running shoe soles with a waffle iron. “Just the invention and curiosity of making shoes had me trapped,” said Nash, an 18-year-old Curtin resident. Nash and classmate Thompson Rogers, 17, who wants to be a personal trainer, jumped at the opportunity last month to design their own basketball shoes for a Nike contest.
