Kristen James: A new year

It's January, and I've read several informative articles about making New Year's resolutions.

I fully mean to sit down and consider what I accomplished in 2012 and what I want to see happen in 2013. I have goals for my home, my writing, personal improvement, and then there are things I'd love to do with my family.

You might be chuckling and thinking, "Yeah, me too, once I get the time."

I completely understand - life is busy and sometimes it seems to be getting busier and busier. Some of this, for me, is due to my current season in life.

Let me introduce myself and give you an idea of what I'll be blogging about.

I'm a wife and mother, and our family is a bit of a modern-day Brady bunch. My husband and I both came with three children.

Together, we have five boys and one girl, ranging from my youngest in third grade to my husband's oldest, who will graduate high school this year.

My daughter is 12 and 8 months, which might say it all. It's an exciting, delicate and sometimes scary age for a parent.

We have a children in grades three, four, five, seven, eight and 12.

The kids play football, wrestling, soccer, basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, cross country and lacrosse. One year, I had three kids on three different teams for baseball and softball!

Several of our children are in band, one likes drama, and the youngest loves taking art classes.

It's amazing to watch their individual talents and passions emerge.

We also strive to have a family identity to give each kid a solid foundation from which to grow.

Now, if you've watched any movie on blended families, you know they're usually a comedy about everything going wrong, or a drama about all the interpersonal grudges and issues.

That makes for great books and movies, but it's not what we want in our family. Thankfully, our two sets of kids became friends early on.

I will say, with so many different personalities and interests, life can be an interesting adventure, one that I wouldn't trade for anything!

We just enjoyed a full, busy and memorable Christmas with all six kids and many other family members, and as the holiday passed, I realized this might become a rare occasion.

Next Christmas, one of the ‘kids' might be studying abroad.

Luckily for us, the next child won't graduate for four years.

For work, I'm an author and freelancer, and I feel blessed that I've been able to work from home with a flexible schedule. If a child gets sick and calls from school, I can simply save my project and go get them.

It can be challenging to work during summer or when kids are home, but it's been well worth it.

I love writing, and I'm excited about blogging with other women for Douglas County Moms.

As women, we each have our own story with unique experiences, joys and struggles, and yet we share a universal love for the people in our lives, a drive to nurture our family in a loving home, and maybe even get a few minutes for ourselves here and there.

I look forward to sharing my journey with you and wish your family a wonderful 2013!
