Near the end of the first day of his murder trial, Mark Allen Vanderhoof reached for a tissue to dry his eyes. The 53-year-old logger was listening to his story warp under questioning by detectives. The taped interrogation was played Tuesday in Douglas County Circuit Judge Ronald Poole’s courtroom. Detectives were cordial but persisted in asking about inconsistencies in Vanderhoof’s account. Eventually, he tearfully admitted there was more to the story. Vanderhoof has pleaded not guilty to murdering Dennis Young, a “happy, healthy” 2-year-old boy his family called “Bubba,” according to Deputy District Attorney Kathleen Johnson.
