Photos from the Riddle fire camp

Though they weren’t gathered for recreation, Douglas Complex firefighters found many of the familiar accessories of camp life in makeshift shelters at Riddle Elementary School. The school is hosting a contingent of about 500 firefighters deployed to battle the 16,000-acre Rabbit Mountain blaze, one of three fires making up the Douglas Complex north of Glendale. Crews taking breaks from the front lines grabbed a bite to eat and took a few minutes to unwind, phone home or catch up on personal hygiene. After a rest, it wouldn’t be long before they’d be suited up again and back in business with containment and mop-up operations expected to be tested by today’s heat and lower relative humidity.
