Donald “Dwight” Downing died peacefully on Friday, June 1st, 2018, with his daughter and sisters by his side.

Dwight was born May 14, 1948, in Seaside, Oregon, to Floyd and Ora Downing. Soon two little sisters would follow, Debra and Donna, all three carrying the tradition of the “Triple D” initials. The siblings all grew up in Crescent City, California, and graduated from Del Norte High School. Dwight went on to attend the farrier program at California Polytechnic State University and worked most of his life as a certified farrier in California and Oregon. Throughout his storied career he bred, raised and trained some of the fastest horses in the PNW, often running at Portland Meadows and Grants Pass Downs.

In addition to being a farrier and horseman, Dwight was a logger and drove truck for many years.

Dwight is survived by his daughter, Darla Clark; stepsons, Jim and Mike Sharp; stepdaughter, Kathy Hanlon; his sisters, Donna Lawson and Debra Clark; niece, Brea; and nephews, Adam, Sam and Jonathan.

An informal celebration of life will be held Saturday, June 9th, 2018, at Splitz Grill starting at 2:30 p.m. and running through the post time of the Belmont Stakes at 3:30 p.m.
