Merton H. Peterson was born July 8, 1935, in Montana to Howard and Beulah Peterson and went to his eternal home in heaven March 14, 2017, following a lingering illness. He graduated high school in Great Falls, Montana, in 1953, received his Bachelor's degree from Seattle Pacific University in 1959, and his Master of Divinity degree from Western Evangelical Seminary (now George Fox Seminary) in 1962. He then served as pastor of Evangelical Churches in Montana for 26 years, before moving to Roseburg in 1988, where he has since resided with his wife, Joanie. Together they raised three children, Wendy, Colette, and Brent.
While in Roseburg, Merton served as a volunteer driver for the state, volunteered as chaplain at the V.A., and found joy in serving the Lord through the Roseburg Alliance Church.
He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Marilyn. Merton is survived by his wife, Joanie; his children, Wendy Newby (Dick) of Puyallup, WA, Colette D'Agostino (Scott) of Bozeman, MT, and Brent Peterson (Polly) of Newberg, OR; his grandchildren, Tali Newby, Becky Newby, Abby Newby, Ryan D'Agostino, Taylor D'Agostino, Chase D'Agostino, Chandler D'Agostino, Josie D'Agostino, Maggie Peterson (Ryan), and Bailey Peterson; his sister-in-law, Beverly Christian-Dull of Roseburg; brother-in-law, Don Kruse of Roseburg; and brother-in-law, Wesley Isbell of Athol, Idaho; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Merton's passion in life was to love and serve Jesus. As his daughter said on learning of his passing, “This is the day he lived for all his life,” knowing that he would spend eternity with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His memory will always be in our hearts, honored and loved for his godly life.
Thanks goes out to Amedisys Hospice nurses, staff and volunteers, as well as caregivers from Advantage Home Care. You all gave Merton such loving care, and the family is deeply grateful.
Services will be at Roseburg Alliance Church Saturday, March 25, 2017, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Roseburg Alliance Church or Amedisys Hospice. Pearson's Funeral Home is in charge of final arrangements.
