The opposition to a Home Rule Charter in Douglas County would like to make the issue about the timber industry and federally managed forest lands; about the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution; or about the independence of our elected sheriff.

They would have voters believe that this is all about angry, dissatisfied misfits.

The Home Rule Charter is about none of these issues. Simply put, the charter is an effort to broaden the base of representation on the Douglas County commission and to professionalize the management of what is a $100,000,000 operation. This is democracy at work. An effort to give people throughout the county more of a voice. A chance to break the cycle of unproductive and slowly deteriorating county government.

Don't be distracted by controversial issues. Don't let the $100,000-plus negative campaign of the "no charter" group change the subject by throwing out unrelated hot-button issues. We want broader representation. We want a voice in our county government. We want better management of county resources. It is that simple.

Vote yes on 10-159 for a more effective, representative, better managed and more responsive county government.
