I got my voters pamphlet in the mail recently. I turned first to the Douglas County Commissioner Position 1 race. It’s obvious, to me at least, that the race is between Tom Kress and Alek Skarlatos. Both have the same prior governmental experience: None. Tom is a businessman in Roseburg who runs a small business that I frequently visit. Alek is also a small businessman but with fewer years experience.
I was a successful businessman in Roseburg for over 35 years, and I see some value in that, but it does not automatically make one able to run a county with a $140 million budget. Alek has been described by the opposition as being a celebrity with little or no experience and who does not really want to be commissioner. I say that he is much much more than that. He very much wants to take this thankless job, because he wants to work for the people of Douglas County. I have found Alek to be a very smart and hard-working individual. He has strong contacts in Washington, D.C., that no one else running has. He has life experience that will help in being a better commissioner.
I truly believe that Alek Skarlatos is the best candidate for the position and I urge you to vote for him to help get our county going in the right direction.
