As members of the board of directors of the South Umpqua Rural Community Partnership (SURCP), we take issue with the op-ed piece by Mr. Todd Vaughn published in The News-Review on Nov. 29. Mr. Vaughn's comments do not represent the positions of SURCP on a number of issues.

In addition, as a matter of foundational principle, and decades of practice, SURCP is committed to collaborate constructively on issues facing our forests, streams and communities. We recognize that many of the issues we face collectively are often controversial. It is therefore doubly damaging, in our view, that statements by anyone purporting to be a part of SURCP or one of its committees, attacks our collaborative trust.

While we respect Mr. Vaughn's right to speak his mind, we object totally to his using his position as a member of SURCP to attack us, our collaborative partners or our stated positions with other organizations who work diligently together to restore and protect our watershed and forests.
