Prep Track: Roseburg teams win triangular meets

One word would adequately describe the weather conditions the track and field athletes had to compete in in the later stages of a marathon triangular meet at Finlay Field Wednesday.

Brutal.

But the kids representing Roseburg, Grants Pass and Thurston didn’t let rain, wind and cold get them down for the most part, going at it for nearly six hours before the meet wrapped up shortly before 10 p.m. on the first day of spring.

“Pretend I’m on the beaches of Hawaii, in the warm sun,” replied Roseburg sophomore Gabrielle Kearney with a smile, when asked how she deals with the cold weather. “Try to stay warm, wear my jackets. (Waiting around) is tough sometimes. I just sit, focus, cheer on my teammates, then get in a zone and throw my best.”

Kearney was one of five Roseburg girls to win an event. The Indians captured their meet with 69 points, edging Grants Pass (67) and well ahead of Thurston (41).

Senior sprinter Jason Thomas won two events for the Roseburg boys, who won their meet with 65 points — four ahead of the Cavemen (61) and 10 better than the Colts (55).

Freshman distance runner Mahala Norris, who picked up victories for the Tribe in the girls 1,500 meters (5:13.4) and 800 (2:30.0), didn’t mind the chilly day one bit.

“The weather was great,” she said. “I like this weather a lot ... hate the hot.”

Norris is off to an impressive start in her initial high school track season. She pulled away from Thurston senior Macie Gale in the final 100 meters of the 1,500, then came back for the win in her first 800.

“I felt all right,” Norris said. “I was nervous, but once I got out there I felt good. I probably wanted to do better in the 1,500, but I’m glad I got what I got. I’m pretty satisfied.”

Kearney, the defending Southwest Conference champion in the javelin, won that event with a throw of 122-1. Earlier, she finished second in the discus (102-10, PR) and shot put (34-3 1/2).

“It was a good day all the way around,” she said. “I’m really happy with my discus because I PR’d. The wind wasn’t too bad (during the javelin). It was kind of in our favor, but the rain wasn’t so good. It was kind of hit-and-miss when I was throwing.”

Other winners for the Indians included Breanna Hennricks in the 400 (1:09.02), Kathryn Pitts in the 300 hurdles (54.14) and Shelby Snook in the high jump (5-0).

On the boys’ side, Thomas beat the field in the 100 (11.72) and 200 (23.40). He also joined Levi Holden, Ben Rodriguez and Kenny Freeman on the victorious 4x400 relay (3:32.8).

Freeman, who said he ran all winter in preparation for the season, had no problem winning the 1,500 (4:20.9). He finished second behind Rodriguez (2:08.0) in the 800.

“I knew I had a 4x400 at the end of this (meet) and my coach wanted me to get a good split, so I wasn’t going all-out in anything,” Freeman said. “I didn’t really warm up for (the 1,500) very well and didn’t have the right spikes on, and I just went out to win. I felt great during the race. I’m going for the 1,500 only at district and hopefully I’ll get to state for the first time in track.”

Roseburg also got a first from Zack Moffitt in the pole vault. Moffitt and teammate Jason Bergold both cleared 11-6, but Moffitt won on fewer misses.

Both RHS teams are back in action on April 3 at home against South Medford.
