GLIDE — The Coquille Red Devils tried to get back in the match in the third game against Glide, but the Wildcats were able to rally and complete the sweep, winning 25-20, 25-17, 25-23 Tuesday night in the Sunset volleyball opener.
“We started off slow, but picked it up and pulled out the win,” said Glide senior Jordyn Parazoo.
Parazoo led the Wildcats (2-1 overall) in kills with 13, followed by freshman McKya Filley with eight.
“I thought it was a fun game and everybody did good,” Filley said. “We never gave up.”
The first game was tight until the Wildcats were able to pull away from a 19-19 tie and take a three-point edge. An attempted block by Filley fell short to give Coquille a point but Glide finished the game off.
The second set was controlled by Glide from the beginning. But in the third game, the Red Devils fought hard and forced a 20-20 tie.
But freshman Sierra Mauro got a block that finally gave the Wildcats the lead. Mauro scored another point and some errors doomed Coquille as the ‘Cats closed out the match.
“We had a lot of errors,” said Glide coach Julie Fricke. “I’ve got some young girls and it’s just a matter of getting them experience on the court, and getting a feel for this pace of the game.”
The team is made up of six seniors, one junior and four freshman. Two of the freshmen, Filley and Mauro, are starters.
“The freshmen have done a great job,” Fricke said. “The seniors are great leaders.”
Senior Elle Rappe got 18 digs in the match, and Emily Deardorff and Natalie Cordell combined for 23 assists.
There’s plenty to work on, but Fricke and Parazoo lauded the improvements the team has made since the beginning of practice.
“I like to see the freshmen starting to get the blocks,” Parazoo said.
The three-team league consists of Glide, Coquille and Bandon. Glide will face off against the Red Devils twice more this season, on Sept. 26 and Oct. 15.
“We should do pretty well this season,” Fricke said. “Our goal is always to win in three, so hopefully we’ll continue that.”
