Roseburg man killed trying to cross Interstate 5

A 55-year-old Roseburg man was killed when he was hit by a freight truck in a southbound lane around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 5 near Milepost 124 in Roseburg.

Ronald Page walked into lane and was struck by a 2012 Freightliner driven by Alvin Chandra, 29, of Elk Grove, Calif., according to Oregon State Police.

Chandra was unable to avoid Page, who died at the scene, troopers said.

Chandra is cooperating with the investigation.

According to witnesses, the pedestrian appeared to make several attempts to cross the southbound lanes of the freeway and multiple cars swerved to avoid hitting him.

OSP Lt. Doug Ladd said troopers initially thought it may be a suicide, but are now “leaning toward this likely being an accident.”

The conclusion is based on Page’s movements on the freeway.

“It’s all projective of course, but their interpretations of his movements is he was not intentionally stepping in front of a car,” Ladd said.

Page leaves behind a wife and a sister in Roseburg, Ladd said.

The freeway was fully opened around 7 p.m.

Troopers are asking any witnesses who saw Page prior to or during the accident to call OSP at 541-440-3334.

OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, the Roseburg Police Department and Roseburg Fire Department.
