COOS BAY — Ethan Betts had a double-double and Jordan Lehrer gave the Riverhawks a much needed lift off the bench as Umpqua topped Southwestern Oregon 77-73 Wednesday night on Speasl Court in a Northwest Athletic Conference Southern Region men’s basketball game.

Connor Shaw and Eric Klekas combined to hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch as the Riverhawks fended off a furious SWOCC rally in the final four minutes.

Betts had 24 points and 13 rebounds and Lehrer added 13 points and five boards off the bench.

The road win was important to UCC’s playoff hopes, keeping the Riverhawks (16-8, 7-4 Southern) near the top of the league with second-ranked Portland coming to Winchester on Saturday for a 4 p.m. clash.

Umpqua has lost once at home this season, while the victory over the Lakers (11-13, 5-7) gave it a two-game road win streak and its third conference road win of the season.

Betts and Lehrer combined for 24 points in the second half.

Umpqua never trailed in the second half. The Riverhawks took the lead for good with 2:14 remaining in the first half when Shaw made a layin for a 29-28 advantage.

The Lakers trailed 71-61 with 4:35 left in the game and held UCC without a field goal the rest of the way, but Klekas hit 3-of-4 at the line to keep the Riverhawks in fornt, then Shaw made 3-of-4 in the final 14 seconds to put the game away.

Shaw finished with 12 points and six assists, while Klekas chipped in 14 points on a night when the Riverhawks did not shoot very well, going 25-for-66 from the field. They did make 21 of 27 free throws.

SWOCC hit 25 of 64 from the field, but was outrebounded 44-30, and outscored in the paint 38-28.

Coleman Johnson added eight points and 11 boards for UCC.

The Lakers were led by Skyler Bradford with 22 points.
