WINCHESTER — The Northwest Athletic Conference recognized Umpqua freshman Rachelle Persson as Southern Region defensive player of the week for her efforts last week.

Persson, a defensive specialist out of Mt. Edgecomb High School in Kalskag, Alaska, replaced Kyrie Keffer as libero in Umpqua's match with Lane on Saturday and deliverd 23 digs and a 2.57 serve-receive efficiency.

Umpqua defeated Lane in four sets to snap a five-match league losing streak.

Keffer, a four-time defensive player of the week, suffered an injury in Friday night's match that wasn't revealed until midway through the Lane match. Persson was already at libero at that time.

It is the first honor for Persson this season and the fifth time a Riverhawk has received defensive player of the week.
