BERKELEY, Calif. – KJ Harrison and Logan Ice both homered but third-ranked Oregon State was unable to overcome a five-run California fourth inning in a 6-2 loss to the 17th-ranked Golden Bears Thursday night at Evans Diamond in a Pac-12 Conference baseball game.
Both home runs came off Cal starter Daulton Jefferies, who held the Beavers to four hits. Harrison hit a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence in the first, putting the Beavers up 1-0.
Ice’s shot, his team-leading fifth of the year, came on a 3-2 pitch from Jefferies in the seventh. The solo shot was the final run of the game.
Jefferies won for this sixth time this season, striking out four in a complete game effort.
Drew Rasmussen (4-1), a game-time decision, started for Oregon State (16-3, 3-1 Pac-12), and struck out five in 3 1/3 innings. He did allow four hits and five runs – three earned.
Cal (12-6, 2-2) and OSU meet again at 7 tonight at Evans Diamond.
Oregon State’s relievers, consisting of Scotland Church, Jordan Britton and Christian Martinek, combined to hold Cal to one hit and one run over the game’s final 4 2/3 innings. Martinek’s turn in relief was his collegiate debut.
WASHINGTON 9, OREGON 6
SEATTLE, Wash. – Gage Matuszak hit a three-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to give Washington the win over Oregon in the Pac-12 Conference game.
Oregon (10-8, 1-2 Pac-12) jumped out to a 3-1 lead with a run in each of the first three innings.
Washington (11-6, 3-1 Pac-12) took advantage of the Ducks’ missed opportunity and scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-3 lead.
Oregon finished with five two-out RBI, with Bennett delivering three.
