Umpqua continues to stock its 2019-20 baseball roster with a Southern Oregon flavor as head coach Jeremiah Robbins signed four players this month with ties to the Umpqua and Rogue valleys.
Jacob Luther and Payton Hope, teammates on the 2018 Dr. Stewart’s American Legion team, will join the Riverhawks after graduating from Umpqua Valley Christian and Sutherlin High, respectively.
Luther is a second baseman for the Monarchs and was the Class 2A/1A Special District 4 player of the year in 2018. He also plays soccer and basketball for UVC.
Hope is a right-handed pitcher and outfielder at SHS, where he also plays basketball. Hope was a first-team all-Sky-Em League selection in 2018 as a utility player and was also an honorable mention Class 4A all-state selection.
UCC also announced the signing of North Medford High’s Ryan Sandoval and Brady Buchanan.
Sandoval is an outfielder, middle infielder and pitcher, while Buchanan is a left-hand hitting third baseman.
Sandoval was a second-team all Southwest Conference selection at pitcher in 2018 and a Gold Glove recipient in 2017.
Sandoval and Buchanan will rejoin former high school teammates Joshua Robbins and Jonathan Glassman with the Riverhawks.
UCC will begin play in the fall of 2019, 34 years after the last Umpqua baseball team played a game.
The Riverhawks will call Legion Field home, and coach Jeremiah Robbins will coach the Dr. Stewart’s as well as UCC.
The college has taken a big role in helping fund-raise to put in an artificial turf field at the ballpark in Stewart Park.
