MONMOUTH — Freshman runners Derek O’Connor and Savannah Slay led the Umpqua Community College cross country teams Friday at the Ash Creek XC Festival at Western Oregon University.

O’Connor finished the 7,000-meter race in 24:46.28 for 39th place in his first ever cross country race. Nakai Sinohui finished 48th in 25:14.65.

Western Oregon’s Dustin Nading won in 21:02.46 to lead his team to victory. The UCC men’s team finished ninth with 211 points.

The Riverhawks’ women’s team finished seventh with 184 points and was led by Savannah Slay.

Slay finished 41st in the 5,000-meter race in 23:51.85. Jaysie Fox finished in 25:26.13 and the rest of the UCC women’s team stuck together, finishing within 30 seconds of one another.

Umpqua Community College will compete at the St. Martin’s Open on Sept. 22 in Lacey, Washington.
