The Mt. Hood Saints delivered an upset on the opening weekend of the Northwest Athletic Conference Southern Region women’s basketball season.

Eighth-ranked Mt. Hood had five players reach double figures in a 78-72 victory over two-time defending South champion Umpqua in Gresham on Saturday in the Riverhawks’ league opener.

Courtney Jackson had 20 points and six rebounds for the Saints (11-4, 2-0 South), who led 31-26 at halftime. Rachel Watson added a double-double with 15 points, 13 boards and three blocked shots. Kassidy Ellett chipped in 13 points and four assists.

“I thought we’d gone over their stuff (in practice) and were prepared, but obviously we weren’t,” UCC coach Dave Stricklin said. “Defensively we weren’t good enough and you combine that with not shooting well that made it a struggle for us.”

Taylor Stricklin and Darian Mitchell carried the No. 2 Riverhawks (11-3, 0-1) offensively, combining for 42 points. Taylor Stricklin had 12 points in the fourth quarter, hitting three 3-pointers.

Stricklin, a Sutherlin High graduate, had 23 points and seven rebounds but only shot 8-for-22 from the field — 4 of 15 from 3-point range. Mitchell, out of Douglas High of Winston, posted a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Macie Reinen, a Sheldon High product playing in her first game for UCC since becoming eligible, chipped in eight points and three assists in 16 minutes. Grace Campbell contributed seven points, six boards and three assists before fouling out.

“(Macie Reinen) shows a lot of promise. She’s athletic and quick,” coach Stricklin said. “She’s not in game shape yet and she’s missing in-game experience.”

The Riverhawks didn’t shoot well, faring 35 percent (24 for68) from the field and committed 16 turnovers. Mt. Hood converted 47 percent (32-for-68) of its shots.

Umpqua will host Linn-Benton (8-6, 2-0) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Roadrunners defeated Portland 73-48 Saturday.

LBCC has three former North Douglas High players on its roster — Kalli Frieze, Jhana Lane and Sabrina MacDowell.
