Darian Mitchell scored a college career-high 28 points and added 14 rebounds for a double-double, leading the Umpqua Community College women’s basketball team to an 87-56 victory over Olympic in the Clackamas Thanksgiving Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Randall Hall in Oregon City.

Mitchell, a redshirt freshman post out of Douglas High in Winston, shot 9 of 16 from the field and converted 9 of 12 free throws in 29 minutes. She also hit one of six 3-point field goals as the Riverhawks improved to 3-0 on the season.

“Darian played pretty well. She was the difference in the game,” UCC coach Dave Stricklin said.

The Riverhawks got 17 points and four steals from Taylor Stricklin, and 11 points and three steals from Cielo Gonzalez. Grace Campbell only had four points, but contributed nine rebounds and five assists.

The Rangers (0-3) trailed 41-26 at halftime.

Umpqua shot 42.2 percent (27-for-64) from the field and 67.5 percent (27-for-40) from the charity stripe. Olympic (0-3) struggled with its shooting, finishing 29.7 percent (19-for-64) from the field and 41.4 percent (12-for-29) from the foul line.

The two clubs combined for 37 turnovers. UCC held a slim rebounding advantage, 50-46.

Danielle Monzon led Olympic with 24 points.

“It was never in doubt,” Dave Stricklin said. “We got off to a slow start ... Sienna (Riggle) and Cielo (Gonzalez) got in foul trouble and that threw us out of synch. We gave up way too many offensive rebounds (21), but it was nice that we got a chance to play everybody.”

The Riverhawks will face Clackamas at 2 p.m. Sunday to conclude the tournament. The Cougars (1-1), coached by Sutherlin High graduate Jim Martineau, defeated Pierce 103-77 Saturday.
