WINCHESTER — Umpqua Community College student-athletes are not just competing in sports, but they also continue to push each other in the classroom.
It was announced Thursday that 21 student-athletes had a 4.0 GPA and 36 athletes made the President’s or Dean’s List during fall term.
“We have a very bonded group,” said Andrea Bowden, the school’s obstacle course racing coach. “They hold each other accountable. They’re hard workers.”
The men’s OCR team had an average GPA of 3.33, while the women’s team had a GPA of 3.29.
“This is the first (OCR) team in the nation and we have a special obligation as a team to be representatives of this privilege we have of being a trendsetter,” Bowden said. “We want to represent our school and our sport.”
OCR was added this fall, along with women’s cross country which earned an average GPA of 3.29.
Volleyball athletes also had to combine work on the court with work in the classroom, and were able to achieve an average GPA of 3.49.
Other athletes continue their studies while staying in shape for their respective sports.
