SAN DIEGO — Roseburg's Ethan Smith and Jim Stelson won their first-round match at the USTA National Grandfather-Grandson Hard Court tennis championships on Friday.

Smith, who is a senior at Roseburg High School, and his grandfather defeated Larry Collins and John Cross of Newport Beach, California, in straight sets (6-4, 6-3).

The Roseburg duo is scheduled to play Seattle's George and Richard Eitel at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the second round.

Stelson and Smith won the USTA National Grandfather/Grandson Grass Court Championships in July 2018 at Longwoods Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.
