The Dallas Dirtbags will play in the winner’s bracket of the Class AAA American Legion baseball state tournament after defeating the Hillsboro Barbers, 10-8, Saturday at Legion Field in Roseburg.
“We knew they weren’t going to be easy, the Barbers are a very good team,” Dallas coach Joseph Duran said. “I don’t care if it’s 1-0 or 100-99 as long as you come out and play. The kids played well and competed.”
The Dirtbags took an early lead in the slugfest, going up 4-0 after the first inning and still leading 8-3 after three innings.
In the third inning, Dallas’ Tristan Fergus hit a single to score Anthony Zellner.
On the next play, Jacob Maiben scored from an error on a ball put in play by Treece Earhart. An error on a ball hit by Peter Mendazona scored two more runs for the Post 20 Dirtbags.
But the Barbers came back in the fourth and fifth inning, scoring five runs over those to innings to shrink the lead to 9-8 after five innings.
Hillsboro’s Rowan Ramsay hit a two-run single in the fourth. In the fifth inning, Dillon McNeil drove in Ian Lawson and Blake Crippen hit a two-run triple to score Patrick Muskat and Michael Bennett.
Dallas’ Jackson Holstad then had an RBI single to score Mendazona in the bottom of the sixth inning.
“These guys do a good job making sure they get a good pitch and don’t get themselves out.” Duran said. “Jackson with the big hit in the very end was pretty clutch.”
In the seventh inning, Dallas pitcher Braden Allison struck out one, walked one and allowed one hit — a double by McNeil — but kept the Barbers from scoring.
“The pitching staff in general, we’re just going though a lot of guys,” Duran said. “We have a lot of guys that can pitch.”
The Dirtbags have seven high school quarterbacks on their team, according to coach Duran.
“We have some athletes that can throw,” Duran said. Jaret Stewart pitched the win for the Post 20 baseball team. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out five. Allison, Kaleb Reid and Kaden Reidhead pitched in relief.
The Barbers were able to get eight hits in the game, including a home run by Christian Cooney in the third inning. Blake Crippen led Hillsboro with two hits in three at-bats.
Hillsboro’s Ramsay, Cooney, Lawson, McNeil, Justyn Gerzog and Bennett each had one hit in the game. McNeil and Lawson each hit a double in the game, while Ramsay had three RBIs.
“That team can swing it, we were trying to pitch to contact and they were hitting some balls.” Duran said.
Dallas did not have any multiple hitters, but Fergus, Blake Arritola, Jacob Maiben, Holstad and Derek Maiben all recorded one hit for the Dirtbags.
Dallas will face Corvallis at 1 p.m. Sunday.
