NORTH BEND — Roseburg’s Pepsi Bottlecaps fell 4-3 in 10 innings to Columbia Gorge on Thursday morning at Clyde Allen Ballpark in North Bend.

The ‘Caps (23-5) were the first team eliminated from the 2018 Class A American Legion baseball state tournament in North Bend.

“You never want to go two and out,” Pepsi coach Justin O’Byrne said. “Our expectations were to play deep into the tournament. The reality is, we’re not.

“That doesn’t take anything away from the kids, they played 20 innings — about three games — in 18 hours. They were resilient and the breaks didn’t go our way. That’s just baseball sometimes.”

It was the second extra-inning loss for Pepsi in the tournament, the Bottlecaps dropped their opener 12-10 in 10 innings to the Hillsboro Sky Sox.

“We had a tough time over the two games, especially over extra innings, to get the big base hit that would allow us to walk off with a win. Unfortunately for us, we were unable to do that,” O’Byrne said.

Mason Littlefield led Pepsi’s offense with four hits in five at-bats. He scored twice on a pair of singles from Garrett Zeimet.

Luke Van Norman knocked in Pepsi’s other run with an RBI single.

Columbia Gorge will move on to play Roseburg’s Dr. Randol’s Crowns at 3 p.m. Friday.
