Douglas County rancher embodies pioneer spirit

There are plenty of agricultural pioneers in Gordon Ferguson’s heritage. His parents, Don and Floy (Strader) Ferguson, had a ranch in the Tyee area. Coming from Sutherlin, 20 miles to the east, they had to use a ferry to cross the Umpqua River to reach the ranch. Gordon’s grandfather, John Ferguson, had a ranch just east of Days Creek. A cable and wood plank bridge across the South Umpqua River was used to reach that ranch. Gordon grew up on those ranches, helping and working on them as soon as he was able.
