Oregon trooper finds elderly man lost and stranded on Interstate 5

An 88-year-old California man who became lost Friday while traveling on Interstate 5 from Vacaville, Calif., was rescued by an Oregon state trooper who bought him dinner and checked him into a motel.

Sgt. Jeff Allison stopped to assist the man, who was found at about 5:25 p.m. sitting in his car parked on the northbound shoulder of the freeway near Milepost 82 between Glendale and Canyonville.

The man, whose name was not released by police, had meant to drive to Elk Grove, Calif. He told police he was waiting for his daughter and was surprised to discover he was no longer in California. The man had been reported missing earlier that day after leaving Vacaville at 10:30 a.m. The man’s van was out of gas, the battery had died and his cellphone was no longer working.

Police contacted the man’s family in San Jose, Calif., and called AAA to tow the van. Sgt. Allison drove the man to Medford, where he had dinner and checked into a hotel reserved by family members.
