The Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club plans to hike an 8.2-mile strenuous loop through old-growth coastal forest Dec. 16 at Cape Mountain, north of Florence.

The hikers plan to take the longer loop past a hitsi (rough native shelter) to Berry Creek and Nelson Ridge, which will offer a view of the coast. A network of trails allows options for shorter loop hikes.

Participants should meet before 8 a.m. at the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot behind the Douglas County Library and should be prepared to share gas expenses to carpool to the hike.
