The Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club is planning to hike Yellowjacket Loop from Hemlock Lake on Sept. 9.

Hikers will meet before 8 a.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse parking lot to head to the 5.6-mile loop.

Yellowjacket loop has a 910 foot altitude gain in the mountains above Glide with wildflower meadows and elk viewing opportunities.

There is an optional .8-mile detour to the site of the remains of the Flat Rock Lookout.

The hike may be changes due to wildfire and safety concern.

One could make the observations that with a name like Yellowjacket the place must be swarming with bees.
