Due to poor air quality and the thick layer of smoke hanging around the Umpqua Valley, the Umpqua Velo Club decided to cancel the 2017 Vineyard Tour Bike Ride, its biggest annual fundraiser.

"We decided not to postpone it because it would be hard to find a date when we felt we’d know the fires were out, but the weather was still good," said Dick Dolgonas of the Umpqua Velo Club. "We are giving everyone who already registered a voucher for next year."

He said in some ways the cancellation has been a relief because future conditions are uncertain, and people have been very understanding and are looking forward to next year's event set for Sept. 8, 2018.

The Vineyard Tour Bike Ride would have entailed five routes of different distances along the roads near Umpqua Valley vineyards.
