The Roseburg boys soccer team played South Eugene well, but dropped a 3-2 decision Saturday in a Southwest Conference game at Finlay Field.
The contest was scheduled for Eugene, but moved to Roseburg due to poor air quality.
"We're getting better each week," said Roseburg coach Jim Giraudo, whose team is 1-3 on the season and 0-3 in conference. "South Eugene is one of the better skilled teams in the state and we battled back from 3-0 down to keep the game close. It was a good team effort."
South Eugene (3-2, 2-1) scored a goal in the 18th minute and led 1-0 at halftime. The Axemen scored twice early in the second half to build a three-goal lead.
Roseburg's Patrick Giraudo was fouled by a South Eugene player and the Indians received a penalty kick, with Jacob Wilson converting in the 65th minute.
The Indians got within one in the 78th minute when Patrick Giraudo scored off a corner kick.
Coach Giraudo said the defensive back line of Robert Gosman, Andrew Yun, Tanner Reber and Kale Lanza had strong games, as did goalkeeper Gage Hines.
Saturday's scheduled SWC game between the South Eugene and Roseburg girls at Finlay Field was postponed due to the smoke. It has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Monday.
