MEDFORD — Freshmen Paige Bailey and Savannah McHugill combined for 20 points as Sutherlin held off St. Mary's of Medford for a 52-41 nonleague girls basketball victory Thursday night.

A year from now, St. Mary's (0-5) and Sutherlin (2-2) will be in the same Class 3A conference; this game, though, was a good growing contest for the four-time defending Class 4A state champion Bulldogs.

Senior Harlee Baker scored Sutherlin's first 11 points, but spent much of the remainder of the game on the bench in foul trouble. She finished with a team-high 16, and the Bulldogs had to turn to other sources for their scoring.

"It was good to see the other two freshmen pick up the scoring a bit," said SHS coach Josh Grotting.

Bailey had 11 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and McHugill added nine as SHS evened its record.
