The Roseburg High wrestling team completed a successful weekend by beating Newberg, 36-28, Saturday in the Class 6A championship match of the Oregon Classic at the First Interstate Bank Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.

The top-ranked Indians compiled a 7-0 dual-meet record over two days of competition. Earlier Saturday, Roseburg edged No. 5 West Linn 36-34 in the quarterfinals and defeated No. 4 David Douglas 39-29 in the semifinals.

Roseburg got falls from Thomas Spence at 126 pounds, Tristin David at 132 and Terrell Jacks at 220 against No. 2 Newberg. Winning by decision were Hunter Sparks (120), Colin Rietmann (145), Garrett Russell (160) and Brandon Jeffers (195), while Caleb Jeffers (138) won by disqualification.

“Tommy Spence had a great tournament,” RHS coach Steve Lander said. “His pin (against Cody Fettig of Newberg) was a huge swing in the meet. Brandon Jeffers, Garrett Russell and Terrell Jacks were moving up a weight almost every dual. If Terrell doesn’t win all three of his matches today, we don’t win all three duals. He had a great performance.”

Sparks went 7-0 in the tournament, Spence and Brandon Jeffers were both 6-0, David 5-1, and Jacks and Russell each 4-1.

“I’m very proud of the kids. Winning this tournament is a great accomplishment,” Lander said. “We wrestled the best teams in the state and to go 7-0 is a big deal.”

Second-ranked Glide finished fifth in the 3A bracket, beating No. 8 Burns 36-33. Earlier, the Wildcats lost 57-15 to No. 1 Willamina in the quarterfinals and defeated Riverside 40-33 in consolation.
