MONROE — Kyto Anderson walked to lead off the seventh and Andrew Harrington singled with two outs to give Oakland a 4-3 victory over Monroe on Friday in the Special District 3 playoff championship game.
The Oakers (21-5 overall) are the only Class 2A/1A team to defeat Monroe this season. The Dragons (22-5) other losses were to 3A Santiam Christian (twice) and 4A Elmira.
With the victory, Oakland earns the district's No. 1 seed to the state playoffs and will host an opponent to be determined after the rankings freeze Saturday night.
Harrington's hit — his second of the game — made a winner of Sean Winn, who pitched the final 2 2/3 innings in relief of starter Cameron Benzel. Winn struck out four and gave up one hit while facing eight batters.
Benzel gave up two earned runs, four hits and five walks. He struck out five.
Oakland led 4-2 entering the fifth inning, but Benzel walked Justin Doyle to open the inning, then committed a balk. Doyle moved to third on a ground out before Benzel walked Tyson Horning to put runners on the corners.
Winn took over and Horning stole second. A passed ball allowed Doyle to score and an error compounded the issue as Horning came around to score from second.
After the Oakers got out of the fifth inning, Monroe was able to get one more baserunner in the game. Doyle singled with one out in the seventh, but was thrown out trying to steal second and Winn closed the game with his fourth strike out.
Oakland led most of the game, scoring three runs in the first inning three hits and an error. Benzel had the big hit in the inning, a two-out, two-run triple. He scored on Dylan Baimbridge's single.
Harrington doubled in the top of the third and scored on Benzel's single.
Benzel batted 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Harrington was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Monroe's Doyle went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Mason Crowson was 2-for-3.
Monroe will be Special District 3's second qualifier to the state playoffs; third-place North Douglas, ranked No. 11, could advance to state based on its ranking. Oakland defeated N.D. 9-4 earlier on Friday to advance to the title game with the Dragons.
